How to use a suppository

  1. Wash hands well with soap and water.
  2. If suppository feels too soft to insert, hold it under cool water to harden it.
  3. Remove plastic or foil wrapper completely.
  4. If desired, use cool water or K-Y jelly (or another water-based lubricant) to lubricate the suppository tip and the rectum.
  5. Lie on side with bottom leg straight and upper leg bent up towards chest. Gently push the suppository into the rectum, pointed end first. The suppository should be pushed past the muscular sphincter of the rectum (a few centimetres), so that it does not pop out. Remain lying down for a few minutes.
  6. Wash hands well with soap and water.
