Reference Guide: Congestion

The main causes of nasal congestion are colds, flu and allergies. When caused by colds or flu, nasal congestion is a sign that the body is trying to rid itself of the virus or infection. When caused by allergies (to foods, chemical products, dust, pollen), nasal congestion is the result of overproduction of histamine by the body. Camphor and eucalyptus inhalations may help to clear nasal passages.
