Reference Guide: Dry and chapped skin

Skin changes with age; the number of sebaceous glands decreases, along with the quantity of hydrophilic substance, thus reducing the skin's lubrication and its ability to retain water. Unfortunately, the water-retaining substances in the skin that stop it from drying up are not replaceable. However, it is possible to apply a barrier that promotes water retention and also protects the skin against the elements that promote drying (cold, wind, etc.). Some of the useful products are:

GLYCERIN USP
For the temporary relief of mild burns and dry chapped skin.

GLYCERIN AND ROSEWATER
Lightly scented emollient for relief of dry skin.

MINERAL OIL USP HEAVY
Topical emollient. Apply to dry or irritated areas as needed.

LIGHT MINERAL OIL
Use as needed to hydrate the skin.

OLIVE OIL NF (Natural product)
Skin emollient when applied externally.

SWEET ALMOND OIL NF (Natural product)
Topical emollient for the temporary relief of dry skin.
