About Eczema: Making the Diagnosis

If you get inflamed skin, it's important to tell your doctor about any allergies you have and any unfamiliar substances with which you have recently come in contact. Looking at the skin itself will often allow a physician to distinguish particular types of eczema. If the doctor suspects the disease is allergic, you will probably undergo a series of patch tests, in which the skin is scratched with a variety of common allergens to determine which ones you're allergic to.
